Trail Rider Excursion Program (TREP)

Photo: Steadward Centre staff take a member on the trailIn the summer of 2006, The Steadward Centre (TSC) introduced an adapted hiking program called the Trail Rider Excursion Program (TREP). Six members with disabilities explored the Edmonton river valley using the Trail Rider, a one wheeled vehicle that was propelled by two to four people, called Sherpas.  Following the success of its first summer, TREP continues to be offered each year.

In 2007, geo caching, a treasure hunt type of activity using a global positioning system (GPS) unit was introduced. This change reflected a desire to increase the leadership role of the riders.  With geo caching, the rider is responsible for determining the directions taken on the hike using the GPS unit. Teamwork is very important, as the rider and sherpas work together to locate a cache, or hidden container.
