Karen Robinson, MA, (Adapted Physical Activity) Program Director; University of Alberta

  • MA (2005) in adapted physical activity from the University of Alberta. Thesis titled: “The Pre-adolescents’ Perceptions about their Experiences in Disability Sport”

Jennifer (Jen) Peco, MA, Research Assistant; University of Alberta
 

  • Completed Bachelor of Arts degree in kinesiology and physical education in 2002 at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.
  • Under the supervision of Dr. Janice Causgrove Dunn at the University of Alberta, she completed her Master of Arts degree with a specialization in Adapted Physical Activity in Spring 2006.

Related Experience:

  • With an interest in children with disabilities and physical education, her thesis was titled “The Experience of Inclusion in Grade one Physical Education”.
  • Recently received the AABRD Graduate Scholarship for her contribution to the area of recreation for people with disabilities.
  • Course instructor at Grant MacEwan and the University of Alberta, teaching courses related to adapted physical activity and movement education.
  • On the Board of Directors for Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS).

Austin Bergquist, BSc Kin, Functional Electrical Stimulus Program; University of Alberta
 

  • Develops individualised FES exercise programs (rowing and cycling) for people with paraplegia and tetraplegia.
  • Interest in FES stems from practicum experience in Dr. Dave Collins’s Neurophysiology Laboratory in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta, and contact with Dr. Brian Andrews of the University of Oxford, UK, an architect of the FES exercise program.
  • Gained knowledge of muscle activation, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), electromyography (EMG) and several experimental techniques that can be applied to human motor control research.
